Overview

High Tide is seeking a dynamic and fast paced Payroll and Benefits Specialist in our Calgary corporate office to join our collaborative Human Resources team. This is an exciting opportunity for someone who thrives in a high-volume environment and enjoys playing a key role in ensuring employees are paid accurately, on time, and supported through questions on benefits and payroll administrative practices.

Reporting to the Payroll and Benefits Lead, this role will support the end-to-end payroll and benefits process across multiple legal entities, ensuring accuracy, compliance, and exceptional service. You’ll work closely with cross-functional teams while managing a variety of responsibilities, including payroll processing, time and attendance review, and benefits administration. Responsibilities

  • Calculate pay according to hours worked incorporating leaves, overtime, vacation pay, statutory holidays, payroll deductions, and other payroll transactions.
  • Lead and assist with company’s benefits rollout program for designated pay groups; ensure employees are onboarded; manage their enrollment and renewal.
  • Calculate benefits deductions, manage beneficiary forms, update portal with wage changes.
  • Maintain and manage time and attendance software for hourly staff including shift approvals, shift cancellations, and shift scheduling.
  • Strong knowledge of termination process calculations as per employment standards across all Canadian provinces.
  • Initiate periodical payments; prepare and administer cheques, initiate direct deposits.
  • Work with HR and operational stakeholders to work through payroll discrepancies.
  • Issues statements, invoices, receipts and maintain financial records.
  • Update paper and electronic payroll records by maintaining employee changes across various systems (adjustments on pay rates, transfers, new entity movement, consolidation, etc.).
  • Prepare ROE/T4 on a timely basis and assist with EI inquiries.
  • Support the Finance team with payroll reports (monthly headcount, quarterly report, etc.) as needed.
  • Be assigned special projects & ad hoc reporting as required by internal stakeholders.
  • Onboarding and offboarding employees in the Payroll system (Dayforce, Humi, When I Work, Rise).
  • Provide and assist management with Dayforce and Timesheet Approval Training.
  • Cross reference various modules within HRIS to maintain data integrity.
  • Perform union deductions and calculations.
  • Report for workers' compensation for all provinces and administer Ontario employer health tax accordingly for all legal entities. 
  • Ability to speak German will be considered an asset. 

Qualifications

You’ll be a great fit for this role if you have the following:

  • Strong degree of prioritization, organization, and urgency to manage multiple competing pay groups with various deadlines.
  • Ability to work in a fast paced and high-volume environment with consistent growth.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with all levels of an organization.
  • In-depth knowledge of payroll principles and payroll audit working in a public company.
  • Broad knowledge and understanding of business processes and business systems.
  • Prior knowledge and experience using Ceridian Dayforce.
  • US experience is a strong asset.
  • WSIB and WCB compliance for all Canadian provinces.
  • Strong experience and understanding of Employer Health Taxes in Manitoba and Ontario.
  • Strong understanding of CRA requirements for each provincial legislation.
  • Clear, concise, and effective verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to tolerate a high degree of ambiguity, ability to work in highly dynamic, ever-changing environment while meeting deadlines.
  • Advanced knowledge of Microsoft Office and MS Excel.
  • Ability to work in an office working environment onsite.

 Required Education and Experience

  • Minimum of 3 years of experience in a similar position.
  • Required Payroll designation (PCP or CPM).
  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Business Administration, or equivalent.
